Breastfeeding is not just linked to healthier babies and healthier moms, but breastfed babies also have better jaw development. The act of breastfeeding involves a specific coordination of muscles and motion of a baby's jaw and tongue - very much different to bottle feeding. Breastfeeding is a more active activity as a baby has to work to feed, whereas bottle feeding is more passive. Experts have long suspected that breastfeeding is critical to a baby's airway, jaw and dental development. In one study where more than a 1000 preschool children were examined, the kids who have been breastfed as babies were less likely to have alignment of their teeth issues or an overcrowded mouth.
