Pump up the D

According to a study published at the National Center of Biotechnology Information in February 2015, Vit D deficiency can be harmful to both baby and mother. The study indicated that Vit D deficiency could even be a global problem in the breastfeeding mom and baby relationship and is directly linked to sunlight exposure and Vit D supplementation. Monitored Vit D status as early as during pregnancy should be considered to rule out low levels. Breastfeeding moms need as much as 6400IU Vit D per day in order to provide an infant with the much needed 400IU Vit D.Breastmilk is in general a poor source of Vit D containing less than 50IU, thus Vit D supplementation and sun exposure is imperative.
